Norma D. Thomas, DWS, LSW, ACSW

Dr. Norma D. Thomas is the President of the Center on Ethnic and Minority Aging, Inc., Philadelphia, Pa. She received her BA in Social Work from Penn State University, a Masters in Social Work from the Temple University School of Social Administration, and her Doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Work.

From 1994-2004, Dr. Thomas worked for the Widener University Center for Social Education where she achieved tenure as an Associate Professor and held the positions of Baccalaureate Program Director and Assistant Director. Prior to that she taught for two years at the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Work. From 1975 to 1992 Dr. Thomas worked first for the Delaware County Office of Services for the Aging and then the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging. Dr. Thomas has worked in the field of aging for 30 years, as a direct practitioner, administrator, trainer, and consultant.

Dr. Thomas is President of the Board of Senior Community Services, Vice President of the Board for Haddington Multi Services for Older Adults, Inc., Treasurer of the National Association of Black Social Workers, Chester Chapter and Vice President of the Tau Delta Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Chester, Pa. She received the Pi Gamma Mu Outstanding Professor Award in 1998 at Widener University, Social Worker of the Year Award from the Brandywine Division of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers in 2000, the Outstanding Scholar Award from the School of Human Service Professions, Widener University in 2000, was recognized by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Tau Delta Omega Chapter, in 2000 for Outstanding Community Service and by the Board of Senior Community Services for her service from 1996 to 2002. In 2002 she was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Widener University Chapter and received a "Community Hero" award from the YWCA in Chester, Pa. on November 15, 2002. In September 2003, she was honored by the Order of the Golden Circle, Chester, Pa. for her service to the community and humanity. On March 13, 2004 she received a Graduate Good Citizen Award at the North Atlantic Regional Conference of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and on April 17, 2004 she received a Certificate of Honor, representing the Temple University School of Social Administration at the General Alumni Association Founder's Dinner, for her outstanding work in gerontology and community service. On July 13, 2004 she received the first Career Gerontological Social Work Recognition Award from the Institute for Geriatric Social Work, Boston University School of Social Work.

Dr. Thomas is married to Mr. Edwardo León, and has two children, Raina León who began doctoral work in education at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in September, 2004, and Edwardo León who is a sophomore student at Drexel University, majoring in Business Administration.
