| Abstract: |
Cluttering or hoarding behavior exhibited in late life is a complex, multifaceted issue. Practitioners in the field of aging must grapple with ethical, health, safety and community concerns as well as their own personal reactions to these situations. For some individuals, this behavior has existed throughout their life, while for others it signifies sensory loss, physical and psychological impairments. Still for some, it represents the end stage of undiagnosed and untreated mental health disorders. This workshop provides an overview of the behavior, case studies as well as visual representations of actual situations, assessment and treatment interventions in an attempt to create understanding. The bottom line is that these situations take a long time to develop and they do not successfully respond to "quick fixes". |
| Goal: |
To provide participants with assessment strategies and intervention techniques on hoarding/cluttering behavior from the perspective of the older adult. |
| Objective 1: |
Participants will relate, at a beginning level of understanding, hoarding/cluttering behavior in relation to other obsessive-compulsive disorders from a psychosocial perspective. |
| Objective 2: |
Participants will describe the need to triage responses to this behavior based on issues of health and safety. |
