Title: Interventions for Caregivers: What Do Research Evidence and Experience Tell Us About What Works?
Presenter: William E. Haley, PhD, and Ernestine B. Goldstein, BS
Type of Presentation: Concurrent Workshop Session 2C
Date/Time: Monday, Oct 17, 2005
2:45 pm – 4:30 pm
Abstract: Family caregivers of older adults with dementia and other chronic illnesses often face considerable stress. A variety of interventions have been developed to help caregivers cope with the stresses of caregiving, including individual and family counseling, respite care, and support groups. One of the presenters in this workshop will overview what is known from research on caregiving about which interventions are most effective in reducing caregiver depression and burden, and provide evidence on the long-term beneficial impact of some caregiving interventions. The other presenter will provide a perspective from pragmatic experiences in working with caregivers about approaches and techniques that work best in addressing their needs and reducing stress.
Goal: To increase the participants' knowledge about available interventions for caregivers and their effectiveness.
Objective 1: Participants will describe which caregiver interventions have been shown by research to be most effective in decreasing caregiver depression.
Objective 2: Participants will describe practical caregiver interventions that are available in community settings.
