Title: Protection and Therapeutics Against Alzheimer's Disease: Medications and Cognitive Stimulation
Presenter: Gary W. Arendash, PhD
Type of Presentation: Concurrent Workshop Session 2D
Date/Time: Monday, Oct 17, 2005
2:45 pm – 4:30 pm
Abstract: The pathogenesis of Alzheimer's Disease will be presented in this workshop, including current thinking on what causes the disease. Potential ways to protect or treat the disease will then be discussed, as indicated from both Alzheimer's mice and human studies. Prophylactics to be presented include life style activities (such as extent of social and cognitive activity), anti-inflammatory drugs, statins, dietary factors, and vaccinations to protect against the disease. Current treatment approaches to Alzheimer's Disease to be discussed include therapeutic drugs and cognitive stimulation. Special consideration will be given to new therapeutics on the horizon, including a novel vaccination approach that shows surprising promise in Alzheimer's mice.
Goal: To enhance the appreciation and understanding of the participants about the cause of Alzheimer's Disease and how one might protect against or treat the disease.
Objective 1: Participants will relate how Alzheimer's Disease develops, including brain pathology and the key role played by brain inflammation.
Objective 2: Participates will assess the best ways to protect against Alzheimer's Disease, with an emphasis on dietary and environmental modifications.
Objective 3: Participants will list what treatments are currently being used against Alzheimer's Disease, as well as some future therapeutic approaches.
