| Abstract: |
This workshop will provide an update on commonly prescribed medications and risks associated with their use among the elderly. The use of multiple over-the-counter (OTC) medications, supplements and herbal remedies by older adults, and the potential adverse interactions when mixed with prescribed medications will be discussed. Effective and safe dosing strategies commonly used with older adults will also be presented. The participants should gain a better understanding of how to recognize the side-effects of some of the most commonly used medications, and how to help older adults select and safely use all medications and supplements. The discussion will include methods for assessing older adults medication use (e.g., shoe box or brown bag method), better ways for the older person to store and dispense medications, how to utilize the pharmacist's expertise, and how to advocate for fewer, safer and more effective and affordable medications for the older person. |
