Date/Time: Tuesday, Oct 18, 2005

Abstract: In this workshop, Suicide Prevention Training is presented. The discussion will include several important topics such as risk factors for depression, warning signs of suicidal ideation, and facts about depression and suicide in the older population. The training will include a self-assessment on the attitudes and beliefs held by the training participants and a discussion on suicide statistics. Important protective factors will also be discussed in order to prevent seniors from becoming isolated and depressed. Training participants will be asked to complete a true and false handout and a training evaluation to ensure that the training has provided helpful information to them. The final segment of the training will provide important information on local resources to assist seniors in need. Finally, participants will be given the resource information needed to provide intervention to clients as necessary.
Goal: To increase the participants' awareness of the signs and symptoms of depression and suicide, and to provide the necessary tools to service providers to enable them to prevent suicide from occurring in the senior population.
Objective 1: Participants will recognize what signs to look for with regard to depressive illness and suicidal ideation in the elderly population.
Objective 2: Participants will attain the skill and ability to discuss the sensitive topic of suicide with clients or other seniors in need.
Objective 3: Participants will list a number of available intervention resources.
