Title: Managing Difficult Behaviors in Residential Care: Resources and Interventions
Presenter: Paula Black, RN
Type of Presentation: Concurrent Workshop Session 4A
Date/Time: Tuesday, Oct 18, 2005
2:45 pm – 4:30 pm
Abstract: The caregiver's role in a client's management is a considerable job. The work is not only physically difficult but emotionally taxing as well. Even in the best of circumstances there is an emotional burden in caring for residential clients. Being confronted by behavioral problems adds stress to the caregiver, but education and experience can lessen the burden, making us better caregivers while we enhance the physical and emotional quality of life for our residents. This workshop will provide a discussion of difficult behaviors the caregiver may encounter, interventions to help control problems, needed resources, and communication and self-assessment techniques for the caregiver.
Goal: To provide the participants education, resources and interventions to better manage difficult behaviors while caring for residential clients.
Objective 1: Participants will identify issues in residents that could contribute to difficult behaviors.
Objective 2: Participants will list interventions that help control or resolve difficult behaviors.
Objective 3: Participants will discuss effective communication techniques.
Objective 4: Participants will assess their abilities as a caregiver.
