Title: The Florida BRITE Project: Identifying and Treating Substance Abuse, Depression, and Suicide Risk in Older Adults

Abstract: This workshop is intended for participants in the Florida BRITE Project (Brief Intervention and Treatment for Elders), a pilot program funded by the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF). Presenters will discuss screening for alcohol abuse, medication misuse, illicit drug use, depression, and suicide risk, and present data from 1200 screenings in Broward, Pinellas, and Sarasota counties. Participants will discuss methods for improving adherence to the brief intervention and brief therapy approaches, using the web-based, BRITE data entry, and expanding BRITE Project to other counties.
Goal: To provide BRITE participants information on their progress towards implementing an evidence-based treatment for older adults with alcohol, medication, or drug problems.
Objective 1: Participants will learn methods for screening substance abuse problems in this underserved population.
Objective 2: Participants will discuss brief advice/brief interventions offered in elders' homes.
Objective 3: Participants will discuss the data entry process and program evaluation.
