This two day conference offers the latest in policy and practice related to elder behavioral healthcare issues and is targeted to aging network staff, addiction professionals, nurses, advanced registered nurse practitioners, elder consumers and caregivers, guardians, marriage and family therapists, mental health counselors, social workers, nursing home administrators, occupational therapists, physical therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, physicians, pharmacists, geriatric specialists, home health aides, clergy, and others interested in quality behavioral health care for older adults. CEC's will be available.

Goals and Objectives

The goal of the 8th Annual Conference is to provide a unique conference experience focusing on the behavioral health care needs of older Floridians & their families, including information on innovative clinical & program interventions, new State initiatives, & demonstrated best practices related to aging, mental health & substance abuse issues.

Attendees will be provided opportunities to:

  • Gain knowledge of State policy, program innovations, & strategies responsive to the behavioral health needs of Florida's elders
  • Recognize the influence of social support, mental health status, & resources on preparation, response, & recovery from hurricane disasters
  • Recognize AARPs new ten year social impact agenda
  • Recognize the course of schizophrenia over the lifespan, & examine age-related treatment needs
  • Describe the prevalence of co-morbid medical & mental disorders in older persons, & practical interventions "bridging the gap" between services
  • Recognize new developments in research on Alzheimer's Disease, protective behavioral & environmental modifications, & current & future therapeutic approaches
  • Identify intervention techniques responsive to elder grief & loss
  • Discuss evidence-based, innovative approaches to the assessment, treatment & prevention of substance abuse in older adults
  • Define of the role of spirituality in the care of older adults & their families
  • Identify the physical & psychological causes that may predispose for financial exploitation
  • Identify the appropriate use of Baker Act procedures in community & long-term-care settings
  • Describe the value of developing mental health & aging coalitions
  • Improve conceptualization and treatment skills with older adults in sessions that address:
    • the relationship of hoarding/cluttering behavior to other obsessive-compulsive disorders
    • the management of problem behaviors
    • the signs & symptoms of depression, & potential suicide, & effective interventions
    • the proper use of the MMSE, the most widely used cognitive screening instrument
    • the potential adverse effects of mixing commonly prescribed medications with over-the-counter remedies & supplements
